New Holstein is truly a community linked to the past, focused on the future.
Many people look at the community's name for the first time and believe it is derived from the Holstein breed of dairy cows. While the area around New Holstein is indeed rich farmland with a long history of a strong dairy industry, New Holstein actually derives its name from its settlers who came from the Schleswig-Holstein area of Germany. It was an interesting blend of scholars, professionals and working class people who made their new home here in 1848, and that blend continues to manifest itself in present-day New Holstein.
